The M5 East is one of the busiest motorways in Australia and is a key arterial road for Sydney commuters, transporting close to 150,000 vehicle journeys per day.
Ventia operated and maintained the M5 East Motorway on behalf of the NSW Government Authority Roads and Maritime Services (Roads and Maritime) from 2011-2020. Forming part of the Sydney orbital road network, the motorway is 10km long, includes two major tunnels and is also a critical passageway for Sydney's international trade freight.
Our M5 East operations were managed centrally through the Motorway Control Centre (MCC) located in Sydney's south west. We delivered comprehensive maintenance services and responded to all incidents quickly and efficiently, to make sure we kept all lanes flowing freely and safely.
Our services included:
- asset management and asset life cycle cost management
- 24/7 control room management
- environmental monitoring
- fire and life safety system management
- closure management
- incident response.
Enhancing asset management capability
We drew on our strong asset management and maintenance capabilities on the M5 East to work closely with Roads and Maritime and assisted them with their life cycle approach to asset management. We aligned with their strategic objectives and helped them to realise the full value and potential of their assets.
We attained International Standardisation Organisation (ISO 55001) certification in 2016 for this contract by deploying a 'fit-for-purpose' asset management and maintenance system that collects and analyses defect and asset condition data to monitor the network's status and service level compliance.
Over the duration of the contract we continuously improved our maintenance practice, in accordance with the ISO 55001 framework, to ensure contractual compliance by:
- Annually engaging the Australian Road Research Board (ARRB) to perform high speed data testing. By translating and interpreting this data, we delivered cost effective pavement maintenance treatments to achieve pavement whole-of-life cost and best Net Present Value (NPV).
- Preparing an Annual Pavement Condition Assessment report for RMS to demonstrate contractual compliance.
Excellence in service delivery - incident response
Our team responded to more than 200 incidents every month with an average response time of 8.7 minutes. They worked to maximise road users' safety with the aim to always keeping Sydney moving.
We reduced incident response and clearance times (despite the increasing vehicle journey load) by improving processes, proactively monitoring traffic flow and using control measures to manage speed.
A network of talented and expert people
We're proud of our experienced and talented people and invest in their professional growth and development.
Leading by example, our M5 East Operations and Maintenance Manager, Nadir Hashmi (pictured below), was part of the 2018 Roads Australia (RA) Fellowship Program.
As part of this Australian mentoring program, Nadir had access to new opportunities to develop his leadership skills, build strong networks and remain engaged in our industry.
