Ventia, in partnership with Suez through our joint venture Watersure, is responsible for the operations and maintenance of the Victorian Desalination Project through to September 2039.
A team of 90 people, living locally, support the ongoing operations of the plant which is located just outside Wonthaggi, approximately two hours south east of Melbourne. 
The operations and maintenance tasks include operation of the 150GL facility 24/7, both preventative and reactive maintenance across the plants 38 hectares and 29 buildings including mechanical, electrical and instrumentation maintenance as well as ongoing improvements across the facility. In addition, the team is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the 225 hectare ecological reserve surrounding the plant and the 84km pipeline that connects the VDP to the Connected Water Authorities.
The vast array of pumps, pipelines and supporting infrastructure required in the desalination process demands highly skilled technicians along with a sophisticated asset management plan to ensure all aspects of the facility are operating at their optimum. The highly skilled operations teams operate the plant through the state-of-the-art Plant Control System.
The plant has a design capacity of more than 150 billion litres of water a year, flexible water ordering of between 0 and 150 billion litres, and the capability to expand to 200 billion litres a year.
Caring for the local environment 
Surrounding the plant is 225 hectares of ecological reserve incorporating wetlands, coastal and swampy woodlands which includes:
- Millions of trees, plants and shrubs made up of 127 different species, all of which are
- indigenous to the local area.
- Eight kilometres of trails for pedestrians, cyclists, and horse riders
- Information points and boardwalks
- Bird hide, viewing decks, picnic shelters and public amenities
- Nine new dunes which have been constructed by using the spoil created during construction.
The eco-reserve is open to the public.
