The contract covers approximately 1,200 kilometres of local roads and focuses on improving resilience, reliability and whole‑of‑life network performance through early intervention and data‑led maintenance planning.

Description

We provide road maintenance and renewals services for the Far North District Council’s South Maintenance Area. The contract incorporates a proactive maintenance model designed to identify and address network issues earlier, improving safety, resilience and long-term value for the community.

Asset Management and Planning

Ventia’s approach to asset management includes maintaining a detailed inventory of assets, regular inspections, and condition assessments. They have developed a long-term strategy aligned with FNDC’s goals and budget constraints, ensuring efficient allocation of resources and quick response to emergencies. Cost estimation and budget management are crucial aspects, with strict quality control measures in place to meet required standards.

Through the term of the previous contract, our Puketona based team acted as first responders across multiple significant weather events, managing extensive network disruption and maintaining critical access for emergency services.

Our structured response processes, including frequent situation reporting and real‑time network status updates, provided Council and emergency stakeholders with timely, reliable information and have since informed best practice across similar contracts.

Scope of work

The scope of works under the South Maintenance Area contract includes routine maintenance, renewals, and emergency response activities across sealed and unsealed roads, including:

  • Pavement maintenance: Inspections, pothole repairs, crack sealing, and resurfacing
  • Vegetation management: Maintaining sightlines and reducing safety and fire risks
  • Signage and markings: Installation and upkeep of road signs and pavement markings
  • Drainage maintenance: Clearing culverts, drains, and water tables
  • Emergency response: Rapid response to severe weather events and incidents
  • Footpath maintenance: Repairs, renewals, and new footpath construction
  • Guardrails and edge markers: Maintenance, replacement, and cleaning
  • Minor bridge maintenance: Deck repairs, timber works and protective coatings
  • Surface treatments: Resealing, crack sealing, and patching
  • Unsealed road maintenance: Grading, metalling, and dust suppression
  • Safety inspections and repairs: Identification and rectification of hazards
  • Capital works: Targeted capital projects delivered through the maintenance contract, including retaining structures, carpark resurfacing, and line marking
