Our Brisbane Motorway Services (BMS) team delivers road asset maintenance and incident response services across 64km of the Gateway and Logan motorways for Transurban Queensland, through a joint venture between Ventia and Lendlease.

Our team of over 80 people, including 30 incident responders, support Transurban Queensland to maintain the 34km long Gateway Motorway, 30km Logan Motorway and 88 associated bridges.

Incident response services

Since August 2018 the BMS team has managed close to 13,000 traffic incidents including motor vehicle accidents, refuels, tyre changes and tows to safety.

Our incident response services include a 'tow to safety' offering, where our team can tow a vehicle off the road network to a safe location if it is undrivable.

Motorcycle incident response units

We've also introduced motorcycles as first responders in an incident for faster response to road users.

The results

  • 30% improvement in on-the-scene response time
  • 30% improvement in clearance times
  • 90% improvement of road user compliance with reduced posted speed limits.

Our talented team

BMS is proudly Australia's first incident response provider to develop a business link with RSL and Career Shift, to target veterans looking to transition into the civilian workforce.

Recruiting incident response staff with military or emergency services backgrounds has benefited both our team and our client, as it has been proven that the skill sets are transferable to the role and requirements of 'providing supportive first contact' to road users during what is often an extremely stressful time.

'One of our buses broke down as we exited the M1 offramp. Our bus had 22 children and two staff on board. Within minutes we were assisted by the incident response team... Their attention to detail was fantastic... I was humbled by their level of care. This crew knew exactly what they were doing and made everything seamless. I remain forever grateful." — Kimmi Tupetagi

Brett Simpson, Road Operations Manager at BMS says the network provides challenges, but the team works collaboratively to address any issues as they arise.

'Delivering these services in an open road environment has unique challenges, particularly when it comes to safety," says Brett.

"The weather, wildlife and other environmental risks on a motorway must be planned and managed to ensure the safety of our staff and public.

"Ventia's Critical Risk Protocols establish the essential requirements for how we manage critical safety risks on our operations in the open motorway environment.'

An award-winning team

As a reflection of the strong culture of achievement and the focus on safety, in 2019 the BMS team were proud to receive awards at both a state and national level at the Australian Institute of Project Management (AIPM) Project Management Achievement Awards (PMAAs).

Held annually, the PMAAs are considered one of the industry's most prestigious and seek to recognise, honour and promote outstanding achievements in program and project leadership. Operations and Maintenance Manager, Simon Kirkpatrick, also won the Project Manager of the Year Award (Professional Services) at the awards.

In 2018, the team were Winners in the 2018 QLD Safe Work & Return to Work Awards in Category Four - 'Most significant improvement to work health and safety performance'.

The Safe Work and Return to Work Awards recognise the leaders in work health and safety or return to work, and nominations in Category Four are about acknowledging the way companies have made changes that have improved risk management, safety systems, injury prevention and/or safety culture.

Following the implementation of several key strategies, the wider team saw an improvement in business reputation and client confidence.
