Ventia, on behalf of AusNet Services, is carrying out essential clean-up works at the former Portland Gasworks site to make the area safer for the community and environment.

The former Portland Gasworks site at 25 Glenelg Street is undergoing an important environmental restoration to remove historical pollution and make the land safe for potential future use.

AusNet has engaged Ventia, a highly experienced environmental remediation contractor, to carry out clean-up works between August 2025 and mid-2026.

This work is being delivered under strict EPA Victoria guidelines, with independent environmental consultants and an accredited auditor supervising the process.

Why does this work need to take place?

We aim to make the area cleaner and healthier by:

  • Safely remove and dispose of polluted soil at licensed facilities
  • Protect local water and environmental health
  • Prepare the land for safe, future use

What’s involved

The remediation project will be completed in five stages:

November 2025 Construction Update

Key activities underway this month include:

• Assembly of the temporary Odour Control Enclosure (OCE), with cranes assisting in lifting the steel frame into place

• Installation of the emissions control system for the OCE, including air filtration units to manage odour and dust

• Continued excavation of targeted areas within the site

• Transportation of contaminated soil off-site for safe disposal

• Ongoing environmental controls to manage dust, odour, and runoff

• Increased truck movements to and from the site, managed within approved haulage routes and designated hour

Managing impacts

While every effort will be made to reduce impacts on residents, businesses, and the local community, there may be times where disruptions are unavoidable.

Here’s what you can expect:

  • Works will generally take place Monday to Friday, between 7am and 5pm. Some works on Saturday may be required from time to time
  • Heavy vehicles will access the site via Glenelg Street
  • Temporary structures, such as an Odour Control Enclosure and air filtration systems will be installed to manage dust and smells
  • A Construction Environment Management Plan (CEMP) is in place to control noise, vibration, odour, dust, and stormwater
  • Regular monitoring will ensure air quality and water levels remain within safe limits
  • The site will be fenced, signed and secured to protect workers and the community

AusNet and Ventia are committed to keeping the community informed and involved throughout the project. Signage, regular updates, and community feedback opportunities will be available
