Ventia installed a repurposed rail bridge over a gully

Ventia completed the final stage of a new shared walking and cycling path in central Te Kamo in August as part of a project designed to promote community connection and transport options that have a minimal effect on the environment.

The work, which began in October 2023, included widening footpaths to allow for shared pedestrian and cycle use, installing a 50m-long repurposed railway bridge over a gully, and connecting the existing shared path from Fisher Road to Kamo Road.

Ventia also added traffic calming and safety features to roads in the area and upgraded the path to Te Kamo Village with road markings, new lighting and kerbing. Where the path crossed a railway line, a level crossing was installed with automated gates.

Ventia Lower Northland Branch Manager Guillaume de Rouvroy said the project saw an on-site team of 15 working together to build the path through terrain that required retaining walls in some areas and a high degree of precision and skill.

I’m delighted with how the new path has been received. This work has helped create a safe and accessible path for walkers, cyclists, and riders of mobility and recreational devices, supporting Whangārei District Council’s walking and cycling strategy and long-term infrastructure plans.

The project was partially funded by Waka Kotahi’s ‘Transport Choices’ funding programme, which aims to support New Zealanders using more low-emission travel options to reduce the impacts of climate change.
