Ventia was a finalist for the Environment Award and received the honour of Highly Commended at the 2022 Civil Contractors Federation NSW Earth Awards for our work on remediating the site of the future Parramatta Light Rail Stabling and Maintenance Facility in Sydney's west.

The Earth Awards recognise companies that have contributed to a project which has excelled in environmental performance and outcomes.

From May 2018 to September 2021, Ventia was engaged by Transport for NSW to remediate a 6.2-hectare site at Camellia to the south of the Parramatta River.

The site was historically used for chemical manufacturing by previous owners, resulting in residual contamination of both soil and groundwater. Following Ventia's remediation works, it will be used to maintain and house the light rail vehicles and control centre that will operate the light rail system.

A team of environmental specialists

Ventia's General Manager Environmental Services, Adam Fletcher said our team of environmental specialists are experienced in solving complex environmental challenges, with the team successfully completing two phases of work to remediate the site.

"The first portion of the remediation work involved installing an underground barrier wall around the site to prevent contaminated groundwater from migrating."

"The second portion of the remediation work involved geotechnically improving the ground and installing an integrated capping system across the surface of the site to contain historical contaminants."

We are incredibly proud of our team and their pursuit of innovative solutions to deliver successful remediation and rehabilitation outcomes for the project and broader community.

Ventia worked with the client to ensure specific safety and environmental controls were established, and specialist monitoring equipment was used to ensure the controls were operating effectively throughout the project.

The project also provided the opportunity for Ventia to engage Sage Civil, who are industry leaders in raising the profile of women in civil and training opportunities for Indigenous people.

Through their participation, 28% of their onsite workforce were women, 44% of their onsite workforce were upskilled in verification competencies and statements of attainment, and three trainees commenced their Certificate III in Civil Construction Plan Operations.
